Choanal cleft swab samples from 770 wild Canada geese (Branta canadensis) and 358 blue-winged teal (Anas discors), captured for relocation or banding, were examined for the presence of avian pneumovirus (APV) RNA by reverse transcription (RT)-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and for virus isolation. The swab samples were pooled into groups of 5 or 10. Sixty eight of 102 (66.7%) pooled goose samples were RT-PCR positive for APV RNA. Thirteen of 52 (25.0%) pooled blue-winged teal samples were RT-PCR positive for APV RNA. APV RNA-positive samples were inoculated onto chick embryo fibroblasts (CEF) and QT-35 cells. Infectious APV was isolated from five Canada goose pooled samples in CEF and from one Canada goose pool in QT-35 cells but not from blue-winged teal.
Avian Diseases is an international, peer-reviewed journal that publishes original basic or clinical research of the highest quality from various disciplines including: microbiology, immunology, and pathology. Scientific papers on poultry, pet bird and wild bird diseases including: etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, control, food safety, antibiotic resistance and epidemiology are accepted. The mission of the journal is to enhance scientific knowledge and promote avian health. Intended readership: Avian students, educators, practitioners, researchers, diagnosticians, pet and wild bird enthusiasts and specialists, national and international colleges of veterinary and medical sciences, field veterinarians, veterinarians and specialists involved in poultry health and avian diseases, avian diagnostic laboratories, food safety scientists, public health departments, epidemiologists and disease control laboratories.
The American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is allied with the American Veterinary Medical Association. We are the professional organization for all poultry veterinarians in North America with many Central and South American members. The primary mission of the AAAP is to provide continuing education opportunities for poultry veterinarians and microbiologists working with poultry. We accomplish this by funding 4 regional meetings and 1 national meeting each year. The organization also provides educational material for veterinary colleges and poultry science departments in the U.S. and around the world. We provided, free of charge, educational material to students and universities in many developing countries.
